Northern Lights in Iceland: October 2024

Photographic Adventure Overview

Join me on an 8-day photographic adventure through Iceland, a land where fire and ice collide under the dancing Northern Lights. We’ll explore the iconic landscapes of South Iceland, from the black sand beaches of Vík to the thunderous waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, capturing their grandeur against the dramatic sky. As we venture north, we’ll discover the majestic beauty of Mount Kirkjufell, its symmetrical peak reflected in the surrounding waters—a photographer’s dream.

Timed during the Northern Lights season, this journey offers the extraordinary chance to witness the auroras as they illuminate the Icelandic night, painting the skies with ethereal colors. With every turn, we’ll find the perfect blend of light and land, from glacial lagoons to volcanic terrain, each moment offering a unique opportunity to capture Iceland’s wild essence. Whether under the soft daylight or the magical glow of the auroras, this adventure promises unforgettable images and experiences.

The itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Iceland! We collect the car at Keflavik airport and immediately begin the journey north. We spend the first evening on the Snaefellsnes peninsula hunting for the northern lights, sleeping near Grundarfjordur.

Day 2

The day is entirely dedicated to visiting the Snaefellsnes peninsula with the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, immense lava fields, several churches and the rock formations of Londrangar.
In the evening we then travel to the Golden Circle area to sleep near Geysir.

Day 3

In the morning we will photograph some of the iconic spots of the famous Golden Circle, including the powerful water jets of the geysers, and some of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls: Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui.

Day 4

The first stop of the day is Skogafoss, possibly the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland, we will then head towards Dyrholaey from where we can photograph the vastness of the black beach and a majestic rock arch. We will then move on to Reynisfjara, where we can capture photographs of the stacks in the middle of the stormy sea, before reaching the town of Vik where we will stop for the night.

Day 5

The fifth day involves a long journey, from Vik we will pass through the Fjadrargljufur canyon, where we will stop for a short trek. We will then continue on to Skaftafell Park where we will have the opportunity to photograph several glaciers. In the afternoon we will arrive at the glacial lagoon and Diamond Beach where we can shoot the sunset.
With a bit of luck at night we will be able to admire the northern lights dancing on the glacial lagoon.

Day 6

The day begins with the colours of dawn colouring the icebergs on Diamond Beach, we will then move on to Vestrahorn, where we will spend the day exploring different locations between the beach and the lagoon.

Day 7

This day also involves a long drive. After photographing the sunrise in front of the Vestrahorn, we drive along the Ring Road all the way back to Selfoss, stopping along the way to photograph locations already seen in different weather conditions.

Day 8

From Selfoss we drive to the capital, Reykjavik, for a more relaxing day among the city streets before returning the car to the airport and leaving Iceland.
